86. Death of Mr. Andrew Cress. From the Tazewell Independent, Published at Washington, Illinois, Thursday, January 9th, 1879. Died at his residence in Woodford County, Ill., three miles north of Washington, Tazewell county, on Saturday, January 4th, 1879, Mr. Andrew Cress, aged sixty-nine years, four months, and twenty-nine days. The deceased was born in Eastern Virginia on the 7th day of August, 1809, removing to Tazewell county, Ill., in the fall of 1832. On the 21st of August, 1834, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Kindig, with whom he lived in perfect peace and happiness till the day of his death, and by whom he had eight children, three of them having passed on before to the better land. The surviving five, all sons, as they married and settled in life, he located near to his own residence. Mr. Cress and his wife were immersed together into the Christian church, in the summer of 1853, Elder John Lindsey, of Eureka, Ill., who was then pastor of the Christian church at Washington, performing the solemn rite. The children, as fast as they grew old enough, followed the example of their parents, and those now living are worthy members of the church -- those who sleep in death having been bright examples of piety and devotion. Andrew Cress was a man of great energy of character, and though commencing a poor boy, grew to be wealthy and influential. In all his movements in life, whether in church or state, he gathered around him a large circle of friends who looked to him for advice and counsel. He was liberal in supporting the gospel, and faithful at the house of God; but it was in his own home that he stood forth the princely, model man. Warm-hearted, generous, polite, elegant, cordial, he made everything to sparkle and shine round about him. All who knew him knew him only but to love him. The word fail was not in his vocabulary. When he undertook any enterprise, it had to succeed. Full of life and energy, ardent in spirit, when he engaged in any contest, to use his own words, it was "to make it go". And though in his seventieth year, he never realized that he was old, but was as sprightly in feeling as a boy, ever cheery and hopefully radiant, and as fond of the tumble and scramble of life as a young man of twenty five. His death happened thus: Having been to Washington in a sleigh, he was returning home. Arriving at the Bowen place, he was overtaken by Mr. Washington Grove’s team, attached to a bob-sled, containing seven individuals. All at once the parties in the bob-sled commenced hallooing, and the driver began to whip the horses, with the intention of passing Mr. Cress. The latter’s horse at this demonstration naturally spurted up into a good trot, but his hat blowing off he looked back, requesting the parties in the bob-sled, though it seems they were unable to make out what he said, to hold up. The bob-sled still coming along at a furious rate, he turned his sleigh a little to one side, fearing they were going to run into him. Unfortunately his sleigh ran one of its runners on to a snow drift, throwing him out in front of the other team, the latter, with their load passing instantly over him, bruising and crushing him in their rapid progress. His face and head were contused and scarred; his neck was pressed to the earth by the runners; his back crushed, and the spinal cord injured, paralyzing his limbs and the lower part of his body. Realizing at once his dreadful situation he said: "Boys you have killed me; take me home to my wife, and call in my sons. I want to see them before I die." For eight days he lingered and suffered. Crowds of friends and neighbors visited him, to whom he talked freely concerning death. From the first he seemed to understand that there was no possibility of recovery, and as the time wore on he calmly gave orders in detail respecting his funeral and burial. "Brother Lindsey," said he, "baptized me and my wife; married most of my children; preached the funeral of my daughter; have him preach my funeral, and let Father Hall assist him. Dig my grave in such a place, and when the services are over commit my body to the Masonic brethren for burial." He was full of God’s word, repeating during his prostration, extensive passages of Scripture. His last words were: "I am going to my blessed Jesus." When visited by the editor of this paper he was triumphant in the prospect of the eternal reward, the crown of righteousness, which awaited him, quoting, without missing so much as a word, the comforting address of the Master to the disciples, as recorded by John, beginning "Let not your heart be troubled," etc., and at the close, in all the consciousness of a living faith remarked, "What a precious assurance is this; what a glorious hope." After a selection from the Bible had been read and prayer offered, with radiant face he joined in singing: Here we are but straying pilgrims, Here our path is often dim, But to cheer us on our Journey, Still we sing this wayside hymn; Yonder over the rolling river, Where the shining mansions rise, Soon will be our home forever, And the smile of the blessed giver, Gladden all our longing eyes. The funeral took place on Monday last, from the family residence, at twelve o’clock, noon. The day was bitter cold, but not withstanding the severity of the weather, the roomy house was crowded to excess with kinsfolks and friends and neighbors, all anxious to show their respect to the sterling worth of him who had so unexpectedly been snatched from their midst. The members of Taylor Lodge, No. 98, A. F. & A. M., were well represented, several Masons being likewise present from Peoria, Eureka, and Metamora. Elder John Lindsey, at the appointed hour, standing just within the parlor door, announced a suitable hymn, which being sung Rev. Z. Hall read ten verses of the chapter in John before alluded to, and led the sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends in devotion at a throne of grace. Elder Lindsey then delivered an exceedingly appropriate discourse, largely biographical but full of sweetness, tenderness, hope, and consolation, Elder Hall making a few remarks at the close describing, in fitting terms, the honesty, uprightness, business talent, and moral and religious worth of his deceased friend and neighbor, with whom he had been intimate for a long period of years. After resuming his seat, the hymn quoted above was feelingly sung, and the Masons proceeded with their impressive funeral rites, following which those who desired gazed into the face of the honored dead, the Masons, accompanied by the family and friends, bearing the body to its resting place in the Kice burial ground, two miles northwest of Washington, there to await "the resurrection of the just." Andrew Cress was a rare man, of generous impulses, who, as far as God gave him to see the right endeavored to pursue it. His place will be difficult indeed to fill in the congregation of which he was a worthy member, while the community in which he moved has sustained an irreparable loss. To the bereaved mother, the fatherless sons, and sorrowing grandchildren, the INDEPENDENT extends its deepest sympathy, trusting that all their lives may be so ordered that their last end, like his, may be peace -- the peace of God which passeth all human understanding. Resolutions of Respect. The following resolutions of sympathy and condolence, in reference to the late Andrew Cress were unanimously adopted by Taylor Lodge, No. 98, A. F. & A. M., of this city, of which the deceased was a member: WHEREAS, It has pleased the Grand Architect and Master Builder of the Universe to take from among us our worthy and highly-esteemed friend and brother, Andrew Cress; AND WHEREAS, The tenets of our beloved order teach us to bow in humble submission to the rod that chasteneth, while we mourn the sudden and unexpected death of our exemplary brother, we see the hand of an all-wise Father in it, and humbly bow to the dispensation. Therefore, be it Resolved, That in the death of Brother Andrew Cress, this lodge, and the Masonic fraternity throughout the world, have lost a just and upright brother and an esteemed friend; this community a most excellent and enterprising citizen; his family a kind, affectionate and considerate husband and parent; the neighborhood in which he lived an obliging and open-handed neighbor; and the church an earnest and consistent worker for the Master. Resolved, That the sympathies of Taylor Lodge, No. 98, A. F. & A. M., are hereby tendered to the aged widow, and to the family of our deceased brother, in this sad hour of affliction, and can only point them to the life and faith of their deceased husband and parent, which assures a meeting and re-union in a grander and better world. Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be tendered, with the seal of the lodge attached, to the widow and children of our dearly-beloved brother; that they be spread upon the records of this lodge; and that the lodge-room be draped in mourning, and the fraternity wear the usual badge of mourning for a deceased brother, for the period of thirty days. 381.
